The
torsos are developed by adding clay over the foil cores. The heads are then
attached and baked. Liquid clay is used between the head and torso to ensure
a good bond. The first baking of the heads is done very slowly by increasing
the oven temperature by 10 degrees or so for at least 15 minutes at a time until
the optimum baking temperature of 265 degrees is reached. This is done to avoid
cracks in the face from any moisture or air trapped in the clay. Once it has
baked it is removed from the oven and wrapped in a towel to cool down slowly.
This precaution is not necessary in subsequent bakings.
